Disability Access Group

Diverse Cymru believe that people who have personal experience of accessing services are valuable “experts by experience”. They are best placed to know what services are needed and how existing services and access routes can be improved.

This is why we developed a service user involvement project, so we can work together to have a louder voice in the community, service development and decision making processes.

The Disability Access Group was created to address the inequalities faced by disabled people, and to try and assist local councils and businesses to this end.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in these issues and a desire to get involved.

Meetings are every six weeks where the group discusses specific access issues within Cardiff and the Vale and come to a solution on what action to take. They tend to include guest speakers who converse with the access group and examine whether they are in compliance with the most recent legislation.

he group assesses building plans for the local authority to ensure that they are accessible and have appropriate facilities for disabled people. They actively get involved in the community writing letters of disability awareness and arranging meetings with all sorts of people from business owners to ministers to ensure disability legislation is upheld and complied with.

Members are also actively involved in the assessment process through ‘access observations’ and site visits. The access group aim to eradicate inequalities to make a fairer society free from barriers in order to live in a closer community where disability is accepted and celebrated.

The group has assisted:
Cardiff Council
The New Theatre
Millennium Stadium
IKEA
One Stop Inquiry Centre

and have many more ongoing projects
