Include Cardiff is a collaborative community arts project
This project has now come to an end.
Include Cardiff is the first project of its kind at Diverse Cymru and represents an exciting new dimension for our community engagement work. Through this project, and the others we hope will follow, we will help bring our service users opportunities to engage in artistic and cultural expression to find and boost voices that are too often marginalised.
Include Cardiff draws its inspiration from Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History’s Memory Jar project, where visitors were invited to fill a mason jar with objects that represented a personal memory and to write an accompanying label that described it.
Diverse Cymru are holding a series of workshops that aim to bring together the local communities and the various voluntary organisations who work on their behalf. The memory jars will draw attention to the work that they have undertaken together and be used to create an exhibition to demonstrate the many positive changes in people’s lives created by these interactions and ongoing relationships.
These workshops are being led by local artist Helen Joy, who has coordinated drama workshops with the Oasis Café refugee community for Adamsdown Arts Association, run Art for the Heart workshops where participants were encouraged to use visual arts to express their thoughts and has facilitated Solace art groups, whose work has formed the basis of exhibitions in the Norwegian Church, for people with dementia and their carers.
At each workshop a variety of jars, arts materials and everyday objects will be supplied by Diverse Cymru, but people are welcome and encouraged to bring items that represent or evoke strong memories or creativity along with them. Workshop participants and guests will be invited to a private launch event to mark the start of the exhibition.
